AirPort Extreme large disks, Win 7 unfriendly

Ok my AirPort extreme crashes left and right and has a horrible time sharing drives with Windows 7.. but as soon as I format the drives in FAT32 everything is fine and dandy. I guess this is just a note to remind myself..

The drives Im using are:

  • 2TB WD MyBook (Has a power brick. I think this one doesnt work very well regardless of file system because of its sleep mode..)
  • 320GB WD USB (without a power brick)
  • 500GB WD USB (without a power brick)

Airport Extreme and openSuSE 11.3

Ok so this is to document how to get both Printer and Drives shared by an AirPort Extreme to work in openSuSE 11.3 (or linux in general):

  • Make sure the printer and USB drives can be accessed on Mac OS or Windows
  • You need to know the name of your AirPort (to find out you can look in windows, Printers -> Right click -> Printer Proprty -> Location)
  • Install avahi (all the essential packages)
  • Try avahi-browser -ar and see that the AirPort Extreme is indeed found and on the right IP

To add a printer:

  • Go to YaST -> Printers -> Print via Network -> Connection Wizard -> TCP Port (AppSocket/JetDirect) -> Type in the name of the airport in Hostname -> Test Connection
  • If the above passes, then you can select the printer type etc per normal
  • To set the default printer, use lpoptions -d [Printer name]

To add USB drives:

  • su
  • vi /etc/nsswicth
  • Find hosts:, make sure wins is in it too (so the line reads something like hosts:  files mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] wins dns)
  • ping [Airport name], confirm IP is correct
  • cd /media
  • mkdir test
  • mount -t cifs -o rw,password=XXXX //[AIRPORT NAME]/[DRIVE NAME] /media/test
  • The above can be done automatically via fstab as well
  • To find the drive name, you can look in Windows -> Right click My Computer -> Map Network drive (see what the drive name is)

NTFS-3G permission problems

Symptom:

  • Copying files into the ntfs drive gives a bunch of errors about cannot change permission etc
  • The NTFS partition is mounted as root:root regardless of the uid,gid options on fstab

Fix:

  • fstab: ntfs-3g   noatime,user,users,gid=users,uid=blackrose,fmask=133,dmask=022,locale=en_US.UTF-8
  • RESTART (Dont know why this works, but it does. umount/mount does not work after changing the fstab)

Airport Extreme no NTFS?!! WTF!

Ok no NTFS is still ok, but NO where does Apple tell you this until you have bought one. I now have a 2TB NTFS drive that I cannot reformat to HFS+ because I dont have a place to hold it…

Gee Apple.. thanks.

DXVA on HP Mini 311

I have always used CoreAVC for rendering HD videos, mainly because it runs with mkvs that have multiple subtitles, and it was the only one I could find at the time.

CoreAVC isnt free, and it doesnt do acceleration on formats like WMV, just did a google again, and found this: http://myhpmini.com/forum/mpc-hc-for-hd-video-playback-guide-t2331.html

DXVA seems to be alot better than I last tried, it didnt work very well and was crashing left and right…

Anyway, below is a paste of the relevant content, for archiving purposes, credit of course goes to the original author

As you all know, the Nvidia Ion chipset’s GPU supports full hardware acceleration for offloading the entire decoding process to the GPU. MPC-HC is a freeware, open source media player that has DXVA hardware accelerated decoder that can take full advantage of the Ion GPU to offload the decoding of HD video formats such as H.264 and VC-1 in MKV container format, which is very popular now & MP4 container format. This guide will help you configure MPC-HC to do it, as easy as possible without installing any codecs or other extra software, everything is contained in MPC-HC executable itself.

First you need to download and install the latest DirectX Redist, MPC-HC uses some update runtimes that are not included in any version of Windows including Windows 7.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta … ceb6d8fa8d

Now download MPC-HC, you need the 32bit version since Atom N270/N280 only runs 32bit code. I’d suggest download the zip archive and unzipping it, but the installer is fine too if you prefer that.

http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/download- … ic-hc.html

Now after you run MPC-HC, press O to enter Options. Go to Playback, make sure Auto-load subtitles is checked if unchecked. This will enable subtitles for foreign language films if the MKV video has embedded subtitles.

Then go to Output, on XP, select VMR9 Renderless, on Windows 7, EVR Custom Pres is what you should select.

Now go to Internal Filters and make sure Matroska & MP4/MOV is checked in Source Filters. Matroska is the full name of MKV, many just call it MKV for simplicity. In Transform Filters, make sure H264/AVC (DXVA) & VC1 (DXVA) is checked. This makes MPC-HC use its DXVA hardware accelerated decoders.

Go to Subtitles, and set Maximum texture resolution to Desktop and uncheck Round up to power of two. This will give you clear, sharp, crisp subtitles.

And you’re done. Now you can enjoy 720P & 1080P H.264 or VC-1 videos on your Mini 311 with the Ion GPU doing all the hard decoding work on the Mini’s screen or output it through the HDMI port to a external LCD-TV or LCD PC monitor. Again, no extra codecs or software needed to be installed, everything is in MPC-HC itself.

JDownloader on OpenSuSE 11.3

Download JDownloader (backup link below, linux version), unzip, and a bunch of files appear. Sure, java -jar JDownloader.jar, freezes if I’m not on root…

To run JDownloader properly, do the following:

chown -R $USER:users [JDownloader Directory]
chmod -R +r [JDownloader Directory]
chmod +x [JDownloader Directory]/JDownloader.jar

If you also want to link it as a command, do:

vi /usr/bin/jdownloader

Write:

#!/bin/bash
java -jar [PATH TO JDownloader.jar] &

Download: JDownloader [Linux]

This is pretty fun

Been doing some home making, driving around LA picking up everything I need. The studio apartment in Weyburn is pretty cool, things are very very close by. Since its fully furnished, I just had to buy some personal items, and a TV heh.

Will put pictures of the place and UCLA up in the gallery in the next few days.

Feels surreal right?

In under 24 hours, I’m going to be on a plane that would take me half way across the world to UCLA. I mean I’ve traveled to many many countries before, but this time its different. I will be living alone for a year (or 5), studying and in a foreign country… Feel surreal right?

It’s awesome. I don’t get excited over many things these days, but I must say this is slightly exciting!

Matlab Undefined function or method for ‘syms’ mayhem

Installed MATLAB a while ago on my new machine when I was setting it up. Only now did I start using it.

Type in syms x and oh guess what…

??? Undefined function or method 'syms' for input arguments of type 'char'.

Strange… did I completely forget how to use MATLAB? Typed in VER, and Symbolic maths isnt listed…. surely I installed it?

Turns out the 64Bit MATLAB has no Symbolic Maths library, read more here:

http://www.mathworks.com/support/solutions/en/data/1-12XN30/index.html?product=ML&solution=1-12XN30

The solution is basically to install the 32Bit version:
